| We had a fascinating tour of the cloister with a guide who was so passionate
about the subject that he managed to communicate its story to us,
despite our limited French. It was built over a Roman forum and was
not, like most cloisters, for monks, but was a passageway between
the town and the church, to encourage the townspeople to come in
to the church and become baptized. On each side of the cloister the
sculptured capitals have a different theme -- Old Testament,
New
Testament,
Christian
martyrs, and historical events from the era. |
