| Volterra is especially known for its Etruscan artifacts. The large stones on
this gate in the town walls date back to Etruscan times
(other parts of the walls were built by the Romans).
The plaque to the right describes how the citizens
of Volterra saved these ancient stones from destruction
by the Nazis. |
