Unfortunately, while the Orsay's building is impressive, the academism of the 19th-century Salon still seems to have the upper hand when it comes to the paintings. Most of the boring, Salon-sanctioned paintings are in the best display space, while some of the best Impressionist works appear to have been, as Adam Gopnik puts it, "banished to the garret." On the upper floor the paintings actually appear to be "in jail" hidden away behind the pillars that line the hall.
