The Color of Water
by James McBride
Bel Canto

Discussion date: November 10, 2003

What we thought:
Marcia commented that the book reads like fiction but is true. On the whole the group considered it to be an inspiring, spiritual story. Much of the discussion focused on the mother -- her strength and the fact that there are many like her. We reflected on poverty and the many mothers who are struggling to bring up large families. We felt it was easier to be poor in the city than in the suburbs as the city has more and easier access to help and free opportunities. We also discussed the role of mentors as well as changes in society re acceptance of mixed marriage, blacks, etc. While most felt we have come a long way, we agreed we still need to be more tolerant. An interesting comment: "It is a shame that religion caused such chaos."
