The Lady and the Unicorn
by Tracy Chevalier

Discussion date: August 8, 2005

Things people liked about this book:

  • The imagination and skill of the author in creating and peopling a world based on a beautiful work of art.
  • Learning so much about medieval life and all that was involved with the weaving of the tapestry.
  • Aliénor, the amazingly creative and sympathetic blind girl -- most people's favorite character.

What some people disliked:

  • Sex scenes which seemed overly crude to many.
  • Not a "page-turner."
  • Some unsympathetic characters, despite the growth and change of the central narrator (Nicolas).
  • Two-dimensionality of the characters, although some pointed out that you could regard this as a technique that was symbolic of the tapestry itself.

Our favorite tapestry: Sight, with A Mon Seul Desir the runner-up.

Our ratings: Mostly 3.5s and 4s.
