Discussion date: August 11, 2003

What we thought:
We were all impressed with this beautifully written book, and fell in love with most of the characters (T. Ray excepted, of course!). We were fascinated with the intertwining of the images of the bees and the Black Madonna against the background of the civil rights movement.

At some points the discussion veered off into exploration of our personal thoughts and experiences related to the racial issues raised in the book. One member was dissatisfied because she felt there were too many unanswered questions at the end, although we all enjoyed sharing our thoughts on the course that the lives of Lily, Zach, Rosaleen and the others might have taken. We'd love to see Sue write a sequel set sometime close to the present day about the characters.

The consensus was 4 stars (with one voting 5 and another 2).
