What we thought:
Jon Krakauer's expose of fundamentalist Mormon sects in the context
of the history of the Latter Day Saints won high praise from everyone
at the meeting. Its lowest rating
was
4.5 stars, with several 5-star votes. The subject matter was quite
an eye-opener, and led to a very intense discussion touching
on religion, the role of women, and political relevance. We all
found the book extremely compelling and well-written. The only
minor criticism was an occasional difficulty in keeping the cast
of characters straight -- but that seemed unavoidable given
the size of the polygamous Mormon families! |
